The Ryman National Enterprise Challenge 2018

10th July 2018

We are delighted to announce that 2 groups of Year 10 students from Serlby Park Academy reached the grand finals of the prestigious annual Ryman National Enterprise Challenge, the UK’s largest school’s enterprise education competition. This is a huge achievement as 50,000 students, 10,000 teams and 275 schools entered the competition.
The Ryman National Enterprise Challenge is part of the Inspirational Learning Group, whose aim is to provide innovative and enterprising off-timetable events for schools, colleges and universities; engaging, inspiring and motivating students to be the best they can be.
Year 10 Enterprise Day, June 2018 The challenge included a full year group day programme which focused on developing the enterprise and employability skills of the young people who participated including; teamwork, communication, leadership, presentation and creativity. The challenges are 'Real Life' business challenges set by Ryman and Inspiring Learning. The Year Group activity included creating a new stationery product with a marketing plan, including website, shop display, slogan and mascot. Senior leaders in school found it very difficult  to pick a winning team and the decision was made to take 2 teams to the finals; Ryvise and The Serlby Stars.
Grand Finals, July 2018 Our two teams of Year 10 finalists were brimming with anticipation and excitement as they joined students from other schools at the grand finals on Wednesday 4th July at The International Centre, Telford.  Perri Kiely and Jordan Banjo of Diversity, hosted the exciting event.
Our teams presented their 4 minute pitches to a screening panel of entrepreneurs.  Following the pitches, students spent the rest of the morning listening to inspirational and motivational speakers from UK businesses, taking part in enterprising activities and checking the contents of their finalists goody bags!
Following a delicious lunch, all teams assembled in the auditorium for a Q&A session with Theo Paphitis, Challenge Ambassador, entrepreneur, retail magnate and ex-Dragon and Apprentice winner James White. During the Q&A, we were nervously waiting to find out whether one of our teams had been selected as one of the top 5 teams who would go on to pitch on the main stage to Theo and his team of entrepreneurs in front of 2,000 guests!
Both teams of Serlby Park students erupted in cheers and screams when Jordan Banjo announced ‘the Serlby Stars’ as one of the 5 finalists!
The Serlby Stars went on to perform their amazing pitch on the stage. Following the pitch, Jordan and Perri, who were particularly impressed with the ambulance pencil case which had been made by the team and was modelled by Connor, insisted that he gave one more twirl before listening to the feedback from judges! Theo Paphitis referred to our students as ‘brilliant’ and added ‘The fact that you even thought about the NHS is an amazing testament to you guys because we take it so much for granted every single day of our lives, well done for highlighting that’
Theo later went on to say “some of the best pitches I’ve seen on The Ryman National Enterprise Challenge over the years have been even better than the ones I saw in the den!”
The challenge was won by a team of students from another school who impressed the judges with their anti bullying stationery set.
Mrs Bromilow, Careers Co-ordinator, said: "I was bursting with pride with all 11 finalists from Serlby Park. Their four minute presentations to the judges were the result of many hours of hard work. The students represented the academy brilliantly! Well done to all of the Year 10 pupils who took part”
