A-Level

Information Technology 

In Year 12 you will study the BTEC Extended Certificate in Information Technology which is a two year course. In year 12 the units you will study include, Unit 3, Using Social Media in Business, and Unit 2 Creating Systems to Manage Information in the first year and then in Year 13 Unit 1 Information Technology Systems and Unit 6 Website Development will be the units of study.

 

You will be assessed through internal and external assessments. The external units are Unit 1 and Unit 2. The internally assessed units are Unit 3 and Unit 6.

 

Current Year 13 - Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in IT (QCF) 500/9147/5 this is the last year that this course is available due to changes in BTEC qualifications and all students will start the two year extended certificate.

Business Studies

 

There are 2 compulsory units in this course. The unit Enterprise in Business is where you will investigate a variety of entrepreneurs, their motives and rewards, then have the opportunity to look for a gap in the local market and plan for setting up a new business. 

Another unit you will study is Finance for Business, will be where you produce documents needed to raise finance, track cash flow and profit as the business is running.

In addition 2 optional units are chosen from a wide range of topics, you will study, 

Promotion, where you focus on large businesses and look at the branding and promotion methods they use. Then produce a promotional campaign for a new product/service.  And, lastly Recruitment, where you consider your career plan, produce documents needed to apply for a job and experience a mock interview.

A combination of external and internal assessments are used. Students are externally assessed by one exam, on the finance unit and all other units are assessed internally by completing a series of tasks including presentations, reports, posters and producing other learning resources.

Additional Information

The Business, IT and Computing Faculty at Serlby Park are always looking at innovative ways to use the latest technologies to improve opportunities which benefit students.

At the Academy we offer a fantastic range of practical and theoretical Business and IT courses to meet the needs of our students. In IT these range from the development of current abilities, to using and controlling Raspberry Pi, creating games using specialist programming software, creating and building websites and computers and all the theory behind what makes these possible. The qualifications that can be gained are; BTEC Information and Creative Technology, GCSE Information Communication Technology and Level 3 BTEC extended certificate in Information Technology. The Level 3 extended certificate helps build and embed IT skills learnt in the BTEC and GCSE level to enable those students to go on to study IT at degree level.

Due to our successful pass rate of 100%, students are able to go on to further education and can choose to study a range of different specialist areas at College or University. For example, computer science and Information Management, software development and Artificial Intelligence development Choosing these courses can aid students to move into careers that heavily use IT in every aspect.

The new build has 6 brand new state of the art IT rich suites which allow the continual development and growth of our student’s needs. With this in mind all students will have access to the latest technologies, including laptops and tablets. Sixth form students have access to their own network so they can bring their own devices. However, for those who do not wish to bring their own device the sixth form study room has been provided with 20 brand new i3 laptops. 

This BTEC Business studies course provides a good foundation for students moving on to post-16 education, or to apprenticeships and entry level job roles within a range of areas. Achievement at level 2 provides a suitable foundation for further study within the subject. Students can progress on to other vocational qualifications at level 3, such as the BTEC Level 3 in Business or academic A levels such as Business or Commerce. The knowledge, practical and vocational skills learnt will also enhance and support progression to other courses, whilst the unit based on recruitment will give students actual CV’s and interview practice they can use when applying for jobs or apprenticeships in administration, management, finance and retail.
